Most agaves are unconcerned by the hot, punishing sun and little water. They add a sculptural touch to any garden and contrast wonderfully with fine-textured plants thanks to their statuesque, fountain-like features. They work well as security fences as well as firebreak plants.

Depending on the species, agaves have a rosette of succulent or leathery leaves that can be as small as a few centimeters or as much as 2.5 meters (8 feet) in length. The leaves can be striped or variegated, and they range in color from light green to blue-grey.
